Going out in Thailand

Going out in Bangkok (at least in the gay world but I assume also in the rest of the scene) is kind of segregated.  There are places that are foreigner (read: white) friendly and there are places that are almost exclusively Thai.  In my short few days there I got to see a bit of both; JJL is pretty good at finding all the hot spots in town :)

The main staple of the mixed foreign-Thai places is this alley in Silom whose linchpin is DJ Station.  It’s one of the most crowded clubs I’ve ever been into (including mr black on a bad night), it’s massive, and it’s one of several bars in the alley.  The music there is your standard gay club fare, though it’s decent for what it is.  One warning though: trying to meet up with friends here is a bad idea since more likely than not they’ll have gone home with some boy before you’ve even gotten there!

There’s another little strip of gay bars not too far away whose main attraction is 70′s bar, and that one is much more Thai-oriented.  In fact I think that each time I went with my farang posse there guys in my group were the only non-Asian-looking people there.  It was nice to soak in the ambiance a little bit but obviously I couldn’t strike up any conversations here.  One of the places (the room) was actually pretty good for dancing too as far as the music went, but the crowd never seemed to get into it.  What a waste!

  1. You missed Silom Soi 4? and Silom 2/1? Not sure what those ’70s’ bars are but you seemed to have missed a lot. Silom Soi 4 is well know as a meeting spot for Thais and Westerners with 6 gay bars.
The scene is not at all segregated, any foreigner is welcome in any bar.
